Choreographers and Controversy

The outspoken and Emmy-nominated choreographers of "So You Think You Can Dance" have become an increasing source of buzz and controversy. Their creations can make or break a dancer's chances on the show, and devoted viewers often bemoan the effect a poorly-designed routine can have on the fates of their particular favorites.

Reigning SYTYCD champion Benji Schwimmer recently crafted a mother of a West Coast Swing routine for Pasha and Sara. The potential conflict of interest (Benji is big brother to this season's Lacey) may have had some viewers crying foul, but also generated searches on the rubbery-faced, fast-legged showman. And season two contestant Dmitry Chaplin raised the onstage temperature (and his Search profile) with a steamy samba for Danny and Lacey.

Last week, however, marked a new moment in the series' pop status when choreographer Mia Michaels' appearance at the judge's table raised an inadvertent ruckus over her jacket, a Marines Dress Blue with upside-down emblems. A gift from a friend, explained an apologetic Michaels. Searchers (some presumably tipped off by a Michelle Malkin column) investigated the issue and sought out "mia michaels jacket," "so you think you can dance jacket," and "mia michaels offends marines."

Longtime dance superstar Wade Robson has usually drawn raves for his theatrical pieces. Then came the anti-war themed solo he designed last week. Some audience members (including the already-aggrieved Malkin and SYTYCD judge Dan Karaty) took umbrage at Robson's decision to use the show as a forum for politics. Overall, searchers seemed willing to give peace a chance; interest in the Mia Michaels jacket fiasco far outweighed the buzz on terms like "wade robson peace dance."

Okay, SYTYCD, you've graduated to pop culture phenom and inspired people to search on "so you think you can dance controversy." But the dance fans know what the real buzz is about, and we can't wait to see what the choreographers and dancers have in store for us.
