Let It Buzz

As the top 12 on "American Idol" prepare to croon Lennon/McCartney songs for the first time this week, iTunes is reportedly (and finally) poised to add The Beatles' extensive song catalog to its store. What better time, then, to find out which of the Fab Four's songs are the most popular in Search? "Rocky Raccoon" fans, prepare yourselves...
Buzz surrounding the Beatles doesn't stop there. From album covers ("beatles butcher cover") to song meanings ("what let it be is about") and the gentlemen themselves, there's always a healthy ecosystem of Beatles-related searches. A few of the standout themes:
John, Paul, George, or Ringo? The lads from Liverpool take turns storming the Buzz charts from week to week. Teenagers got excited about John Lennon after "Idol" finalist David Archuleta performed "Imagine." Women and men 45-54 have been the most rabid followers of Paul McCartney's divorce news. And even Ringo Starr made a stir (especially with men 35-64) back in January when he politely refused to perform on "Live with Regis and Kelly." George Harrison's Buzz demographics, however, lend credence to claims that he was the coolest Beatle; his following extends from teenage girls to men and women 35-54.
The Beatles in the New Millennium—Julie Taymor's vivid 2007 film, "Across the Universe," continues to make a big noise in Search, with teenage girls leading the charge. We've noted requests for the soundtrack, the cast, MySpace layouts, and quotes. And projects like Cirque du Soleil's "Love" and the 2006 remix album it inspired continue to show up on wishlists.
Cover to Cover—Users still dial up Beatles covers from Fiona Apple and Prince. Even toddlers have gotten in on the game ("baby singing hey jude"). And really, will any "Idol" finalist make their performance as memorable to searchers as William Shatner's recording of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"? Stay tuned.
